What this page helps you do

This guide walks you through the essential steps to set up your Ledger device, install and link Ledger Live, create a secure PIN and Secret Recovery Phrase, and safely interact with wallets and decentralized applications.

Quick start — core steps

Follow these steps to get fully operational with Ledger hardware and Ledger Live.

  1. Unbox your Ledger device; verify packaging integrity and the included Quick Start materials.
  2. Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger site and open the app on your desktop or mobile. (Use the official download page only.)
  3. Power on the device, set a PIN, and write down the Secret Recovery Phrase that the device generates — keep it offline and private.
  4. Install the necessary crypto apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) via Ledger Live and add accounts.
  5. Practice a small incoming test transaction before transferring large balances, and enable available protections for your accounts.

These steps prioritize keeping your private keys in the device’s secure element, away from internet-connected devices.

Security essentials

Keep your Secret Recovery Phrase offline and never share it with anyone. Ledger devices store private keys inside a hardware secure element to minimize exposure to malware and online attacks.

Verify software signatures when prompted by Ledger Live, beware of phishing pages, and enable operating system protections where available. If your device is lost or damaged, you can restore access using your Secret Recovery Phrase on a compatible device or service that supports standard recovery formats.
